Where Architecture Meets the Aegean
THE CORE, SERIFOS
I’ve been exploring more of the Cyclades lately, and Serifos had been on my list for quite some time. I finally made it there in September and stayed at THE CORE SERIFOS and I have to say, it was worth the wait.
What caught my attention first was the architecture. It’s so different from what you might expect from a Greek island stay, with its sculptural shapes, earthy colours and unusual lines. But the more time I spent there, the more I noticed the little things: the way sunlight falls across the walls in the morning, how the shadows shift throughout the day, and how the sea seems to find its way into almost every view.
Architecture That Shapes the Experience
Designed by MOLD Architects, The Core Serifos is unlike the typical whitewashed Cycladic houses you might picture when thinking about Greek island accommodation. The architecture is sculptural, almost otherworldly, with curved walls, earthy terracotta tones and geometric openings that make the whole building feel like part of the landscape. What I loved most was that the design changes with the light.
In the morning, the sun finds its way into the courtyards and across the walls, creating these beautiful, sharp shapes. As the day goes on, the shadows move, stretch and soften. The same corner can look completely different a few hours later. I kept noticing little details that I hadn’t seen before, and naturally. There’s so much thought behind the architecture and the building has a real character of its own. It feels bold and distinctive, yet so naturally connected to the landscape around it. The Core features five bedrooms and can accommodate up to 12 guests.
Waking Up to the Aegean Sea
One of my favourite things about staying here was waking up to the sea. There’s something about opening your eyes in the morning and having that much blue in front of you before you’ve even had your morning coffee. The view stretches out towards the horizon, with the little island of Vous sitting in the water like a giant rock sculpture. Its shape is often compared to a resting ox, and once you notice it, you can’t really unsee it. And on a clear day, you can spot Sifnos in the distance, too.
I love places where you don’t have to go anywhere to enjoy the view. You can stay in bed a little longer, let the morning light fill the room and watch the sea change colour while the island slowly wakes up. Even the shower has a view of the Aegean. Waking up to the sea is lovely enough, but having a sea view from the shower is a nice bonus.
The boundary between indoors and outdoors feels much less obvious, and the sea becomes part of the experience rather than just something you look at from a terrace or from your room.
After waking up to the morning sun and the sound of the sea, taking a shower and enjoying your first coffee by the pool, you might start wondering what to do next. But at The Core, you have everything you need to slow down, be present and enjoy the moment. You may even find yourself not wanting to leave at all.
It's one of those places that makes you feel at home, away from home, while still managing to surprise you with something beautiful around every corner.
If you're looking for somewhere to stay in Serifos that feels a little different from the usual Greek island accommodation, I genuinely can't recommend The Core enough.
I think it's one of the most unique places to stay on the island, especially if you're someone who appreciates architecture and thoughtful design. The shapes, the earthy textures, the way the light moves through the spaces throughout the day... it's the kind of place where you keep noticing something new, even after you've spent a few days there. For design and architecture lovers, it's honestly a dream.
But what I loved is that it isn't just a place to admire. You can actually slow down and enjoy being there. Spend the morning taking in the sea views, linger by the pool for longer than you planned, or simply stay in and enjoy the quiet. For me, that's what makes The Core so special. It has a strong identity, but it also gives you space to switch off and settle into island life.
So if you're planning a trip to Serifos and wondering where to stay, I'd put The Core high on your list. Especially if, like me, you love places that are a little unexpected, beautifully designed and just as enjoyable to experience as they are to look at.
Good to know: The Core is open seasonally, and August and September can be breezy, especially up on the hill, as is typical for the Cyclades. Its peaceful, secluded spot means a car or scooter is highly recommended
The property is close to several beaches, including Lia and Agios Sostis, the Chora which is the capital of the island and Livadi, the main port, is only a short drive away. That makes it easy to head out for a swim, find somewhere for lunch or explore a little before coming back to your own quiet corner of Serifos.
And then there’s the rest of Serifos itself. The island has a wonderfully rugged landscape, with rocky hills, hidden coves and beaches that make you want to keep exploring. As mentioned before, having a rental car or scooter is useful if you want to see more than just the immediate surroundings.
